Lighting Series 1/3: Types of Lighting for Your Home

There are so many elements in design that work together to achieve a “look.” Lighting is a KEY element in creating your look…it helps to create the mood for a space, sets the tone for how a space will be used, and has the opportunity to really make an emotional impact. Different lighting intensities, placements, temperatures, and styles will affect how people ultimately feel in your space. It is important to note that not all types of lighting, along with temperatures and intensities of bulbs, are appropriate for every space. In this first post in my lighting series, I’m sharing about the four types of lighting and will follow up with more tips + tricks for how to create a lighting design plan that perfectly lights up your home!

The Four Types of Lighting:

  1. Ambient/General Lighting - these lights provide a uniform, complete source of light for an entire space, either interior or exterior.

  2. Decorative Lighting - this type of lighting adds drama, interest, and an ultra dreamy mood! It is extra lighting that is not necessary for function and allows you to show off your design style.

  3. Accent Lighting - these lights accentuate a point of interest and are made to shine up to 3x the amount of light on an area as compared to ambient lighting.

  4. Task Lighting - lighting for the purpose of a specific task and placed in a particular, planned location for that reason.

“Lighting is the lifeblood of design, bringing energy to any space it touches.”
